Diluvian Temperals - Battle of Öland

This Omega Centauri instrumental composition recorded back in 2006 follows the events of the fierce naval clash that occurred on 1st June 1676 between the Dutch/Danish fleet and the Swedish fleet during the Scanian War. Below is a time line of the battle that correlates with the music.

1. The wind is a stable West South West gale on the morning of 1st June 1646.
(Start - 1.00min)

2. The Danish and Dutch Amada are in Pursuit of the Swedish fleet.
(1.01 - 1.46)

3. As the Swedes head towards Öland the Dutch sail eastwards overtaking the Swedes using a favourable wind to their advantage.
(1.47 - 3.02)

4. After some grand and extraordinary maneuvers the Swedes find themselves trapped in a vulnerable position off the shores of Öland. The Danish close the gap at a furious pace.
(3.03 - 3.33)

5. With no wind in their sails Claes Uggla commands the Swedish fleet to form a tightly knit defensive formation.
(3.34 - 4.03)

6. However, Lorentz Cruetz misinterprets the signal and turns the Kronan South towards the enemy. Uggla on the Svardet notices his commander’s mistake and turns his ship South in an attempt to avoid a total disaster. As the Kronan turns Cruetz forgets to order the cannon hatches shut and water fills the hull. Fire breaks loose and ignites powder barrels. The mighty war ship explodes, leaving 850 dead.
(4.04 – 4.34)

6. Uggla nearly collides with the sinking Kronan and has to turn away. The formation is broken and confusion breaks the fleet up with half of the Swedish vessels fleeing. Complete chaos and disorder.
(4.35 – 5.30)

7. The Dutch and Danish surround Uggla in the Svardet and after 1 ½ hours of furious battle the ship is dismasted and holed beneath the waterline. As a fire breaks loose on the Svardet Uggla does not command his crew to fight the fire and let the enemy take over the mighty ship. Instead he intended to go down with her.
(5.31 - 6.40)

8. 2000 men are dead and wounded. 3 sunken Swedish war ships vanish beneath the ocean surface.
(6.40 – End)
